The split pulley is an innovative mechanism that makes performer flying, specifically bridles over the audience, easier and neater than ever before. Steel wire rope is fed into the pulley as normal, but the secret lies in the carefully-engineered pulley sheave. The sheave is spilt in two and an electrical signal causes the two halves to move apart on demand, enabling the rope to drop through.
The split pulley system helps to streamline rigging equipment, particularly in performer flying applications or wherever a steel wire rope needs to be hidden prior to use. This can reduce expenses and the need for extra grid space. Better rope management allows smoother, more believable performer flying sequences as no slack rope needs to be visible to the audience at any point. The split pulley system also helps to make actors and aerialists more comfortable in their performance.
Since its development in 2010, the split pulley has been used on numerous shows on the international theater and touring circuit. Riggers and aerial directors will wonder how they ever managed without it!
